To mark the centenary of Morton Feldman (1926–1987) in 2026, this anthology brings into play a profound dialogue between two of the most influential composers of the 20th century. The title, Conversations for Two, evokes the famous recorded dialogues between the two composers, In Conversation: “Radio Happenings”, mirroring the intricate musical rapport between the violin and piano.
The album charts the aesthetic complicity that united both creators since they first met in New York in 1950 — a bond continually shaped by extramusical connections to literature and the visual arts. This shared history is beautifully reflected in John Cage’s (1912–1992) late works. While Feldman’s music challenges traditional harmonic progressions, Cage’s last series embraces Feldman’s signature slow, soft timbres and spacious chord progressions, a shift that became even more pronounced after Feldman’s passing in 1987. Structured around the duality of two musicians and two composers, the program pairs Feldman’s monumental, expansive tribute For John Cage with selections from Cage’s Number Pieces. The release opens symbolically with One — the album’s only solo work — written by Cage in the year of Feldman’s death, also as a special homage to his lifelong friend.
