Mrika Sefa
Mrika Sefa is a Portuguese-Kosovar pianist whose artistic practice encompasses piano, MIDI keyboards, and toy piano, with a particular focus on chamber music and contemporary music. Since 2018, she has been a member of Duo Litanei, founded with cellist Hugo Paiva, and more recently co-founded Nada Contra with percussionist Francisco Cipriano, a duo dedicated to creating and performing new repertoire for piano/MIDI keyboard and percussion. Through these collaborations, she has premiered works by several contemporary composers and released the debut album When You Hear Hoofbeats, Think Horses, Not Zebras.
She is a member of the Concrète LAB Ensemble and the Contemporary Ensemble of Póvoa de Varzim, and regularly collaborates with Ensemble Contemporary Insights and Ensemble Avantgarde at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. Her work also includes interdisciplinary projects in music, theatre, performance, and visual arts, as well as appearances as a soloist with Orquestra Sem Fronteiras.
Originally from Kosovo, Sefa began her musical education at the Pristina Music Conservatory before continuing her studies in Switzerland, earning degrees from the University of Bern and the University of Lucerne. She later completed a second master’s degree in Chamber Music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the Kunst Universität Graz, where her artistic research focuses on performance with MIDI-controlled keyboards and the development of new repertoire for the instrument.
